Martisor
Mărțișor is an old tradition celebrated all over Romania every year, on March 1st.
The name Mărțișor is a diminutive of March (Martie in Romanian).
People used to celebrate the Martisor by hanging a red and white string at their the gate, window, cattle's horn and shed to protect against evil spirits and to invoke nature's regenerative power.
According to archaeological research, the Mărțișor traces its history more than 8,000 years ago. Some ethnologists believe that the Mărțișor celebration has Roman origins, others support the theory that it is an old Dacian tradition.
MartisorIn ancient Rome, the New Year's was celebrated on the 1st of March.
March ('Martius') was named in the honor of the god Mars. Mars was not only the god of war but also the god of agriculture, which contributes to the rebirth of vegetation.
The Dacians also celebrated the New Year's on the first day of March. Ample spring celebrations were consecrated to this event.
In the old times, Mărțișor were made of small river pebbles, colored in white and red, stringed on a thread and worn around the neck. They were worn, to bring good luck and good weather, from March 1 until the first trees would bloom. When the first trees were flowering the Mărțișor were hanged on tree branches.
EASTER TRADITION ON ROMANIA
Egg dyeing is one of the most important Romanian Easter traditions. The painted eggs are always present on the table during the holiday, and kids can hardly wait to participate in the egg tapping competitions. The traditions say that people who knock eggs on the first day of Easter will see each other after death. The first person who taps the egg has to say “Christ has resurrected” (in Romanian, ‘Cristos a înviat’), while the second one goes “Indeed, he has resurrected” (in Romanian, ‘Adevarat a înviat’). The belief is that the person whose eggs are unbroken will enjoy the longest life. Usually, the Easter eggs are painted red and represent the blood shed by Jesus Christ at his crucifixion, but they can also be blue, yellow, or green.
But more specific to Romania is the tradition of dyeing eggs and decorating them with complicated traditional motifs, specific to each historic region of the country. The tradition is especially common in the region of Bukovina, and you can find such eggs at traditional fairs and in monasteries.

“Viflaim” is the ancient
Romanian name for the biblical town of
Bethlehem. The “Viflaim”, as a custom,
consists in a folk theatre play recreating
the moment when the three wise men
and the shepherds appeared to profess the
birth of Jesus Christ and the conflict with
Herod the Emperor. Groups of 20-30 lads,
interpreting various biblical characters
(Jopseph, Mary, Herod –Herodes the biblical
king, the professor, the innkeeper, the angel,
the two shepherds, the three wise men, two
soldiers, Death, the Devil, the Old Man, the
watchman) gather on the evening of 25th
December in front of the village church
and act out the “Viflaim”. Each of them
must be very well prepared for the part he
is interpreting, as this also conveys one’s
dedication to the holy teachings.
